Finding Strength, Support, and Positivity: Terence's Cancer Journey
When Terence M. Edwards was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in March 2022, he was faced with difficult news.
"My doctor told me there was no cure," Terence recalls. "The goal would be maintenance through chemotherapy."
Like many individuals facing cancer, Terence quickly learned that the diagnosis would impact more than just his health. Living alone and retired, he had to adapt to the challenges that came with ongoing treatment and the side effects of weekly chemotherapy medications.
"Initially, adjusting to the side effects was quite difficult," he says. "Fortunately, the dedicated physicians and nurses at St. Thomas Cancer & Hematology Specialists provided excellent medical advice and treatment, which helped me significantly improve my tolerance of the required medications."
Despite the challenges, Terence remained committed to maintaining his independence. Today, he continues to enjoy walking, swimming, cooking, and managing his daily household activities.
One of his greatest concerns after diagnosis was the financial burden that often accompanies cancer treatment.
"Health insurance and income were my biggest worries," Terence shares. "The costs of cancer drugs and infusions are extremely high."
Through his physician's office, Terence learned about Cancer Support VI and the financial assistance programs available to local cancer patients. Over the years, he received grants that helped cover out-of-pocket treatment expenses.
"I was fortunate to obtain grants from Cancer Support VI, and I am very grateful," he says. "These grants reimbursed me for costs that would have otherwise created additional financial stress."
For Terence, the support he received made a meaningful difference in his ability to focus on his health rather than the mounting expenses associated with treatment.
"My cancer maintenance costs were adequately covered," he explains. "That support was invaluable."
Reflecting on the role Cancer Support VI plays in the community, Terence believes the organization's impact extends far beyond financial assistance.
"CSVI's valuable information and financial support help reduce the stress and expenses associated with cancer," he says. "Patients and families need that kind of support when they are already facing so much."
Today, Terence hopes his experience can encourage others who are navigating their own cancer journey.
"Learn all you can about your diagnosis and treatment options," he advises. "Be aware of side effects and possible drug interactions. Keep your own medical records, including lab results, procedures, radiology reports, and medications."
His most important message is simple but powerful:
"Above all, STAY POSITIVE!!"
At Cancer Support VI, we are honored to walk alongside patients like Terence. His resilience, determination, and positive outlook serve as a reminder that while cancer may change life's path, no one has to face the journey alone.
